A three-step guide on how to add luxury to your bedroom

In most homes, the last room to get a facelift is the master bedroom. The kitchen, lounge, bathroom and even children’s bedrooms come first. By the time you make it to your own few square metres of calm you have little cash left to really make a statement. Luxury fittings and a top-notch finish are usually reserved for those rooms on show, i.e. the lounge, kitchen and bathroom. But there are ways to give your room a supermodel-worthy makeover without spending a fortune. Here are three ways to add some oomph to your bedroom on a small budget.

The bed

You should focus your efforts on the bed as this is not just where you’ll spend most of your time, but it’s also the centre of attention. Choose a bed that’s in keeping with the overall design of the room. Are you going for classic Victorian for example? If so, an iron or copper bed frame is most appropriate. If you are going for a country cottage look, or something reminiscent of the seaside, wood is a better choice. Alternatively a suede or leather low-rise bed is modern, fresh and minimalist.

The bedding

The duvet covers and sheets on your bed should make you want to jump in and snuggle up. Tactile fabrics such as velvet, suede and silk are ideal for your duvet cover and bedspread; they ooze luxury, they are opulent, sumptuous and most of all, inviting. For the sheets, 100% cotton has ‘luxury’ written all over it. Look for high thread counts preferably over 200, but 500 is even better. House of Fraser’s luxury bedding collection includes 100% cotton sateen sheets with a 500 thread count.

Your duvet and pillows need to be just as luxurious. Feathers and down, with goose being lighter than duck feathers, are a one-way ticket to a good night’s sleep in a magnificent feeling bed.

The walls

Obviously the paint or wallpaper in your bedroom has a huge impact on the mood and atmosphere. You can create drama and elegance with a feature wall. Choose one wall, the one behind the bed generally works best, and paint or wallpaper this in a different colour and/or pattern. Keep the remaining walls neutral in colour but add interest with artwork and photos on canvas. Simple details in the right places add a lavish touch to the bedroom. Always try to create drama, but keep the overall mood calm and soothing, after all you are trying to sleep in there.
